30 credits – Forecast of energy consumption for buses on SORT cycles i Sodertalje

Scania is a world-leading provider of transport solutions. Together with our partners and customers we are driving the shift towards a sustainable transport system. In 2018, we delivered 88,000 trucks, 8,500 buses as well as 12,800 industrial and marine engines to our customers. Net sales totalled to over SEK 137 billion, of which about 20 percent were services-related. Founded in 1891, Scania now operates in more than 100 countries and employs some 52,000 people. Research and development are concentrated in Sweden, with branches in Brazil and India. Production takes place in Europe, Latin America and Asia, with regional production centres in Africa, Asia and Eurasia. Scania is part of TRATON SE. For more information visit: www.scania.com.

Om tjänsten

Scania is now undergoing a transformation from being a supplier of trucks, buses and engines to a supplier of complete and sustainable transport solutions.

Intro:
Scania is one of the leading European manufacturers of heavy‑duty vehicles (HDV), with global sales of 88’000 trucks, 8’480 buses and 12’810 engines in 2018. When it comes to energy consumption (EC) and global warming, we actively contribute to the necessary reduction of EC and greenhouse gas emissions (GHG). The assessment of future saving potentials, where only concepts or prototypes of the components exist, is done by simulation.

Background:
The upcoming electrification of HDV powertrains in the 2020ies means, that one main assembly group of HDV will be completely redesigned. During the transition period city buses with conventional and electrical powertrains will be sold in parallel. This creates the demand for Scania’s sales team to make reliable forecasts for the expected energy consumption from both powertrain types on the so-called SORT cycles, which are standardised by UITP. For this task the concept for a forecast tool for energy consumption needs to be analysed and assessed for feasibility.

Target:
The outcome shall be an English thesis on the forecast tool for energy consumption, which can be published by the University. It shall also serve as technical report for Traton, thus the companies Scania, MAN, VW Caminhões and VW Nutzfahrzeuge.

Assignment:

– Utilise and extend existing simulation models of Scania city buses with diesel and electrical powertrains to generate a database for the forecast tool.

– Apply the concept for the energy consumption forecast on multiple city buses.

– Check the results from the SORT cycles for plausibility.

– Assess the concept for accuracy and practical feasibility.
