Thesis - Aggregating and utilizing analytics data i Lund

Scope
2 students completing 30 credits (20 weeks) each.

Background
Axis analytics sensors (People Counter, Queue Monitor, etc.) produce statistical information which is used for e.g. reports about customer flows in retail, banks, etc. This could be extended to include other data such as weather data, transactions (purchases in stores, or in bank branches), campaigns, security alerts, access control systems, etc. to learn even more about patterns.

Managing diverse data sources and storing data in an accessible format is a challenge. Making the data accessible for flexible queries is another challenge. Perhaps we can apply rules on top of the data to trigger events when certain conditions or anomalies occur.

We are very interested in adapting the thesis work to suit the students. Their own suggestions on variations on this theme is encouraged.

Goal
Select relevant use cases to provide background for further investigations. There will be people such as the Product Manager, UX Expert and Team Architect available for interviews.

A suggestion how Axis should store data for analysis, arguing why the proposed solution is superior to the rejected solutions. Investigating data lakes is highly interesting.

If going deeply in data lakes; investigate processes and ways of working to avoid data swamps. Recommend key processes for managing the data to keep it useful.

Investigate different methods for data transfer (MQTT or similar vs cloud streaming frameworks or IoT frameworks) and recommend technologies based on the use cases.

Find out what data sources will be interesting and implement a prototype system to store the data points from a selected number of different sources. Use the storage and transfer technologies chosen in the above investigations. Demonstrate a report (visualization) that combines data of different types. It must be “easy” to add a new type of sensor as input and incorporate it into the report.

There are possibilities to demo the results with data from real products.
