Background
Scania Eu6 diesel engines are equipped with an advanced aftertreatment system with the purpose of reducing mainly soot and NOx emissions. In order to control and monitor the function of the system a number of different sensors are used.

To ensure that the NOx sensors used will not break, a dew point strategy is needed as water splash from accumulated water in the aftertreatment system will crack the heated permeable outer shroud of the sensor. Today this strategy is to wait a set amount of time after a specified temperature is measured inside the silencer, to ensure that all accumulated water will have time to evaporate, before starting to heat the sensor. This project aims to reduce this start-up time by using signals such as ambient temperature or relative humidity to evaluate when it is safe to turn the sensor on.

Assignment
The assignment is to reduce the start-up time of the NOx sensors by examining when it is possible to do so without harming the sensor. This project will have both a theoretical part where functionality is developed as well as a practical approach in engine test bed where both the investigation of when it is possible to start as well as validation of the developed functionality will take place. 

Candidate profile
The ideal project candidate have skills in the following areas. However, all candidates will be considered.

  • Experimental work
  • Design of experiment
  • Evaluating and presenting experimental results
  • Measurement technology
  • Modelling in Matlab/Simulink and/or basic c programming skills
  • Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) technology
  • Spoken and written English and Swedish
  • Independent and structured work methodology
