Your role

Saab ATM has an opening for a Senior Staff Systems Engineer in our Automation and Surveillance segment in East Syracuse, NY. Our team designs, develops and improves state-of-the-art products for Air Traffic Surveillance and Air Traffic Management systems. As a Senior Staff Systems Engineer, you will:

  • Create, update and own system level designs while balancing hardware and software implementations
  • Direct the technical execution of multidisciplinary teams by resolving specification conflicts, prioritizing technical tasks, and providing cost and schedule estimates to the product manager
  • Lead design control activities to update and own product documentation trees for complex, software-based, mission and safety critical products including system, software, firmware, hardware and interface specifications
  • Apply problem solving and analytical thinking to identify risks, develop mitigation strategies and generate practical yet innovative solutions
  • Troubleshoot and analyze complex issues in deployed systems to backstop Customer Service and Program Systems Engineers
  • Present technical details to and extract functional needs from internal and external customers both domestic and international
  • Provide direction and coaching to your team, and other systems engineers
  • Support and participate in drafting international standards within the Air Traffic Management industry

Our products include all the components of a vertically integrated Air Traffic Control suite. We deploy primary and secondary surveillance systems for surface, terminal and en-route applications. We integrate airport automation and management systems, electronic flight strips, airport safety logic and airport lighting control systems into complete controller working positions. We develop everything from custom RF and digital electronics with embedded software and firmware to virtualized Linux server software to interactive controller working position displays. Our technologies include air traffic controller display systems, multilateration, surface movement radar, ADS-B, GNSS, target tracking, sensor fusion, embedded and server Linux environments, IP networking, etc.

Your skills and experience

A minimum of a bachelor's degree in engineering from an accredited institution. Software, electrical and system focuses are preferred. Advanced degrees are welcome.

The successful candidate will also have:

  • 15 years of post-baccalaureate experience and/or education
  • Extensive experience in system design and requirements development
  • Established record of meeting complex technical and project objectives.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, technical team leadership is a plus
  • A passion for product development and innovation

 Expertise Desired:

  • Requirements writing and management
  • SysML or UML, use case driven design
  • Aviation, air traffic and/or aerospace experience
  • Safety-critical system development, especially DO-178/278 or ED-109A/153 (or experience in another heavily regulated industry)
  • Linux and IP networking system skills
  • Matlab, C, Java or other software development skills

Must be a U.S. citizen, Permanent Resident (green card holder), or protected individual as defined by 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3).
