Thesis Work: Safety Radar System Evaluation Unit i Kungsbacka

Om tjänsten

Join ABB and work in a team that is dedicated to creating a future where innovative digital technologies allow greater access to cleaner energy.

ABB Jokab Safety R&D department develops functional safety products for use in industrial applications to avoid injuries and deaths. The products that are developed must be free from systematic faults, which means that the development must be state of the art, follow applicable standards and undergo rigorous third parity reviews and tests.

The ABB Jokab Safety product range is very wide, covering emergency stops to advanced safety PLCs. The products mainly consist of mechanics, HW electronics and embedded SW.

Driven by the availability of cost-effective high-performance sensors, small-scale radar systems have become ubiquitous in many applications, such as private cars and industrial automation. Nevertheless, the use of radar in safety systems has so far been limited. Unprecedented functionality may be realized with a multi-sensor radar system utilized for fast and accurate surveillance.

This thesis explores the electronic control unit of a future multi-sensor safety radar system: Raw data are extracted from single sensors utilizing low level signal processing, which is exported to the system control unit where information is fused into a global safety status indication.

Details:
• Period: Start at the earliest 2020-01-01, end at the latest 2020-12-31.
• Scope: 30 ECTS for Master Thesis.
• Number of students: 1-2
• Location: The most part of the work should be performed on site in Kungsbacka, 27 km south of Gothenburg (good public transportations).

Your responsibilities
  • Study how single sensor raw data are extracted, utilizing an existing prototype radar sensor module.
  • Illustrate raw data of two radar sensors (item 1) and joint detection density, by means of high-level analysis software such as Matlab/Octave/R/Python.
  • Specify desired functionality of the control and evaluation unit.
  • Perform a literature search to find an appropriate hardware platform, micro-processor.
  • Realize one stand-alone multi-sensor radar system evaluation unit and verify its functionality against the specification.
  • Describe and discuss the studied control unit targeting multi-radar-sensor integration, fusion and safety assessment, in a report.
  • Further define, extend and constrain the scope appropriately.
Your background
  • You are studying electrical engineering.
  • You have experience of hardware and modern embedded system design.
  • You have some general understanding of modern microprocessors.
  • You are interested in the closely related Thesis Work: Safety Radar System Demonstrator, dedicated to software of a prototype radar system utilizing a laptop instead of a physical evaluation unit.
  • You have at least rudimentary knowledge of signal processing and high-level mathematical programming.
  • You are able to read complex product specifications.
  • You have dedication and aptitude to write clear understandable reports.
