Thesis Worker at Volvo Cars

Welcome to explore the world of Volvo Cars by writing your thesis with us! As a thesis worker in our organization you are supported by a supervisor who follows you during your project. All thesis projects are arranged in business critical areas and therefore you will be able to contribute to our company purpose – providing freedom to move in a safe, sustainable and personal way – from day one!

Background and Problem description
With rapid transformation of BEVs (Battery Electric Vehicles), new functions are implemented frequently. One such function is one pedal drive, where the vehicle can be accelerated and braked by only one pedal. The braking performed in one pedal drive mode is mostly regenerative braking. In regenerative braking the, the kinetic energy of vehicle is converted to electric energy which recharges the battery. Whether regenerative braking or coasting is energy efficient varies based on parameters.

Scope
The aim of the thesis is to evaluate the benefits and drawbacks of Coasting vs Regenerative Braking in BEVs and propose suitable strategies for drive cycle scenarios to improve the energy efficiency of the vehicle. To achieve this, you will need:

  • To create drive cycles suitable for performing this study.
  • Assess appropriate methods of either performing complete vehicle simulations (Using VSim*), developing energy analysis tools, testing in rigs, testing on road to conduct the study.
  • Analyse the impact of important parameters like weight, aero, rolling resistance and define the boundaries when coasting or regenerative braking can be beneficial.
  • Recommend appropriate strategies from the study and validate them.

VSim* (Vehicle Simulation platform - MATLAB/Simulink based application for energy flows in the complete vehicle, that is fully in-house developed.

Do you fit the profile?
The project is suited for Engineering for sustainable development students pursuing a Master of Science degree in, Mobility Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics or similar education. You are proficient in using Python or similar programming language, MATLAB/Simulink. Having knowledge of simulation tools and drive cycles is a merit. You are highly motivated, analytically strong and proactively adapt to changing/flexible scope of the thesis.
