Thesis Worker at Volvo Cars

Welcome to explore the world of Volvo Cars by writing your thesis with us! As a thesis worker in our organization you are supported by a supervisor who follows you during your project. All thesis projects are arranged in business critical areas and therefore you will be able to contribute to our company purpose – providing freedom to move in a safe, sustainable and personal way – from day one!

Background
Evaluating energy consumption efficiency before the in-vehicle tests is an important step in identifying the faults in the system. In this regard, Model-in-Loop and Software-in-Loop tests contribute to performing the virtual tests before the system is tested on the car. Currently at Thermal System Development, a technique has been developed to perform Model-in-Loop testing. The next step is to perform Software-in-Loop testing to evaluate how the Energy Consumption varies. Before that is implemented at a full scale, a study needs to be performed to evaluate the possibilities of implementing Software-in-Loop testing and how close it is to the real-life testing. Thus, the SiL testing will be the main performing goal of this thesis with possibility to include Predictive Control Techniques as an extended objective.

Scope
As part of this thesis the students would spend time with the existing plant models in Simulink and also the production SW models in Simulink and convert them to SilVer compliant DLLs. These DLLs in turn will interact inside SilVer forming a Software-in-loop setup. The students would then run a couple of cases to validate the results against the traditional GT-Simulink setup and report the findings.

If the results are satisfactory and time permits, the students would also investigate the Model Predictive Control aspects of the SW which are in the research phase currently. A use case of flow estimation will be investigated where the student(s) will compare the flow estimations from the Plant models against the SW flow estimations to analyze the effect on Controls.
