Thesis Worker at Volvo Cars

Welcome to explore the world of Volvo Cars by writing your thesis with us! As a thesis worker in our organization you are supported by a supervisor who follows you during your project. All thesis projects are arranged in business critical areas and therefore you will be able to contribute to our company purpose – providing freedom to move in a safe, sustainable and personal way – from day one!

Background
We are a part of the Electrical hardware development for Core System Components. The responsibility is cross carlines i.e. all existing and planned vehicles. The design involves electric, electronic and mechatronic designs. We are responsible for collection, break down and implementation of component requirements and technical documentation in cooperation with selected suppliers, as well as ensure that Analysis and Verification requirements are created, monitored and implemented together with our team.

For some strategic components we are a part of developing detailed solutions on PCB level including selection of electronics. On the other end we are also part of developing the system design of our Core System. This will need good collaboration with the software development area to optimize the solutions. System Safety ISO 26262 will always be a part of the development. Depending on platform, time, situation and product, different level of design work will be required. The work stretches from concept and architectural work to quality and maintenance of the product. Other tasks could be, Perform Design Reviews for the assignment, handle Change management and support purchasing in supplier evaluation and selection, also for the included parts.

With all the new driving scenarios for a road vehicle comes a lot of new requirements and legislations. This is not only putting a stress on the software design, but we also need to have just as safe and robust electrical hardware. With unsupervised AD driving there is no room for failure for critical components and therefore we need to have a robust design and in some cases redundancy to fulfill the needs. This must be implemented in the whole design chain from system level down to component level and there need to be a process and a way of working to achieve this.

Scope
As a master’s student you will perform literature review of all the necessary areas specifically to understand meaning of and how to implement ISO 26262. With the ISO standard in mind, how to design and pick components for different levels of ASIL compliance, and within that and help of tools understand and apply FIT calculation.

The thesis includes:
•    Analyzing and understanding if a robust design is better than the complexity of adding a redundant solution.
•    Identifying how and what systematic and random failures that Hardware design need to cope with and handle.
•    How to verify with simulation and testing that a design fulfills the requirements for the specific application. The outcome of all this is to have a working process for a safety compliant hardware design.

Do you fit the profile
We are looking for an Electrical Engineering MSc student with an interest of electrical hardware design, going down to PCB component level and with a curiosity for the process in how to create a robust and safe design.

Duration
•    Start in January 2022
•    30 points ECTS (academic credits) if in agreement with your Thesis Advisor in University
•    Number of students: 2
