Thesis Worker at Volvo Cars

Welcome to explore the world of Volvo Cars by writing your thesis with us! As a thesis worker in our organization you are supported by a supervisor who follows you during your project. All thesis projects are arranged in business critical areas and therefore you will be able to contribute to our company purpose – providing freedom to move in a safe, sustainable and personal way – from day one!

Background
Volvo Cars is continuing the transformation to electric drivelines which includes developing batteries and control units to handle them in best way when driving and charging. For being able to verify if those control units work as intended a battery must be connected, alternatively be simulated. The later approach is preferred as being more flexible to configure and for testing different battery conditions.

Scope
The goal is to develop and implement a battery model that can be run in real time on an embedded computer to simulate HV-batteries. Having these restrictions, we expect that lowering sights will have to be done in some aspects to minimize complexity and performance needs to fit the dedicated device to be run on.

The thesis will include:

  • Literature study of existing battery models and simulators
  • Creation of a generic battery model that is run on embedded Linux
  • Benchmark of the model against existing more complex models using Simulink or a real battery pack
  • Iteration of the model design
  • Final report describing the parameters used, limitations of the model and trade-offs
  • Adding capabilities of the battery simulator to an existing test environment for the ECU which is controlling the battery
  • Setting up hardware for rig
  • Compare battery simulation against real hardware, requiring work on site.

Do you fit the profile
You should study a Master’s degree in Computer engineering or Electrical engineering to fit best for the thesis work. We see that you have experience of developing on single board computers and mathematical modelling and simulation. Working remotely is fine, but meeting about once a week for aligning is mandatory. You have the possibility to work at the office if needed. We see some experience with GitHub projects as beneficial. Having basic knowledge of batteries is also beneficial.

Duration
•    Start in January 2022
•    30 points ECTS (academic credits) if in agreement with your Thesis Advisor in University
•    Number of students: 1-2
