Audio Compression –
Implementation and evaluation of encoder tools for Multi-Channel Audio

Audio compression is applied in a variety of systems for efficient transmission and storage of digital audio signals. Example systems are mobile phone systems, internet and multimedia communication systems, in-car communication, home entertainment and broadcasting. Audio coding or compression is concerned with reducing the number of information bits used to represent the audio signal while maintaining an application specific acceptable quality level. Development in this area is focused on providing higher audio quality while at the same time reducing the number of bits transported in the air due to limited capacity in wireless links.

A lot of the audio content in future cellular networks will be multi-channel signals. High quality audio signals often consist of a large amount individual channels, each with varying bit rate demands. For such signals, it is typically better to use a channel adaptive bit rate allocation scheme and adaptive selection of encoding mode. Allocating channel bit rates and compression modes is typically based on psychoacoustic principles. As the input sound scene in a recorded audio session may change within milliseconds, it is of highest importance that the compression algorithms involved provides a high and stable presentation quality

This thesis proposal aims at exploring and implementing state-of-the-art techniques for modelling and quantization in an existing multichannel audio encoder design; and based on that design, select and optimize front end compression tools to obtain high coding efficiency at medium to high bit rates.

COMPETENCE

The successful applicants will be self-motivated, M.Sc. students or equivalent with an education in signal processing. The work is research oriented, so ability to learn quickly, work independently and identify problems and solutions is necessary.

You should be a M.Sc. student, preferably in computer science, electrical engineering, engineering physics or similar. Courses in signal processing and programming are considered essential. Further proficiency in C and Matlab is required.   Work location: Luleå.  Please state in the application when you can start.
