Master Thesis: Efficient system behavior modelling in large-scale agile software development i Göteborg

Ericsson is the driving force behind the Networked Society where every person and every industry is empowered to reach their full potential. We make a difference, do you wanna shape the world with us?

Om tjänsten

As a market leader in mobile network solutions Ericsson are constantly working towards more efficient and more effective ways to develop products and solutions. One of the products in Ericsson's portfolio is the Evolved Packet Gateway (EPG). The EPG sits in the middle of the Packet Core (PC) Network as a Gateway between the Radio network and the Internet. All traffic in a mobile network passes through this type of Gateway and thus it has high requirements when it comes to scalability, robustness and performance. The EPG is realized as a distributed real-time system that is split into a Control Plane and a Data Plane. The EPG runs on many different platforms - including Carrier-grade Routers, Virtual Machines and Containers.

Thesis Summary:

Currently EPG development organization uses several kinds of models describing the system behavior stored in the modelling tool IBM Rational Rhapsody. We would like to investigate the benefits of migrate those models into a different format, for easier handling and access, e.g., using GIT. As a part of this process we seek to understand the current state of practice in EPG and the current state of the art in modeling technology.
Therefore, the aim of this Master thesis is to support this process by:

  • Investigating how modeling is currently performed in the EPG-organization. That is, key questions are:◦What kinds of models are created?
    • Which features of existing modeling tools are used?
    • Which features are desired?
    • What purposes do the models serve?
  • Investigating the current state of the art. That is, studying existing modeling tools and academic publications in the area of model-based engineering; proposing specific approaches or technologies, or prospective directions for future investigations.
  •  Creating a prototype or a proof-of-concept, or propose prospective directions for future investigation.

Key Qualifications:

  • Student aiming for a BSc, MSc or equivalent and with an interest for SW programming.
  • Competences needed: SW programming background with interest in system modelling.
  • Holistic view, interested in org and SW-dev processes (rather than detailed specialist in one technical field)
