Start-up Coach to MEST Teaching Program (Business, Communications & Tech) i Accra, Ghana

Meltwater Entrepreneurial School of Technology (MEST) is looking for incubator fellows for 3 month and 1 year assignments supporting software startups in Accra, Ghana or Lagos, Nigeria. At MEST, we are always looking for incredible talent. We have positions available both at the training program and the incubator based on the candidate’s interest and strengths.

The Why:

Established in Ghana in 2008, MEST offers aspiring African entrepreneurs a fully sponsored twelve month, intensive full-time program.

Sourced from top graduates in Ghana, Nigeria & Kenya, 30+ of these Entrepreneurs-In-Training (EITs) are selected each year and receive comprehensive training across the spectrum of skills required to build successful tech businesses, including computer programming, software development, product management, finance, marketing, sales and leadership best practices.

After completion of the program, the EITs have the opportunity to pitch a concept. Winning teams receive a seed round from the MEST incubator to pursue their idea.

Skills and Requirements for a BUSINESS TEACHING FELLOW:

  • Startup experience and a good understanding of overall startup operations
  • Experience applying lean startup principles (build, measure, learn)
  • Experience with financial accounting, financial modeling and unit economics
  • Experience with Metrics and Key Performance Indicators
  • Experience with project management and work planning
  • Understanding of startup business models, product management, digital marketing, customer discovery and customer acquisition
  • Demonstrated interest in technology and emerging business models
  • Knowledge of brainstorming techniques and business idea generation and validation
  • Developing, presenting and evaluating pitch decks and investor materials
  • Passion for teaching
  • Ability to work in a cross-functional team, and to deal with ambiguity
  • Good verbal and written communication in English; good presentation skills
  • Bachelor's degree in the liberal arts, business, finance, and/or entrepreneurship
  • Experience in sales and/or marketing

Skills and Requirements for a COMMUNICATIONS TEACHING FELLOW:

  • Bachelor's degree in communications, business, or a related field
  • Demonstrated knowledge and experience of how to build a personal and/or company brand
  • Demonstrated understanding and ability to successfully apply various forms of communication - verbal and nonverbal, traditional and new media digital - skills in a professional environment
  • Cross-cultural communication experience with emerging & developed markets
  • Experience coaching and managing using various people development methodologies and techniques
  • Passion for training and mentoring young people and a pro-active energy
  • Knowledge of time management and project management concepts
  • Understanding of business management and startup - sales and marketing concepts such as customer acquisition, customer engagement and customer support and success
  • Experience in great storytelling techniques and delivering professional standard presentations
  • Ability to apply logic and critical thinking to problem solving
  • High level English language skills; written and verbal
  • Ability to work alone and take initiative and organized and efficient
  • Ability to work in a team, and to deal with ambiguity
  • Start-up experience in communications & business development is a plus.

Skills and Requirements for a TECHNOLOGY TEACHING FELLOW:

  • Programming proficiency in an objected-oriented programming (OOP) language.
  • Experience building scalable applications:
  • UX/UI Designer: Wireframing, Prototyping, Ideating, developing final designs using Photoshop/Illustrator, etc.
  • Front-End: Exposure and practical skills of one of the popular frontend frameworks such as Ember.js, Angular, React, Backbone, etc.
  • Back-End: Daily development of one of the popular full stack frameworks such as Ruby on Rails, Django, Meteor, Laravel, etc. Experience in both relational (PostgreSQL, MySQL, SQL Server, etc) and non-relational databases (MongoDB, Redis, etc). If you have BAAS experience, that's a plus.
  • Mobile application developer. If you do native development with Java (Android) or Objective-C/Swift (iOS) that's a plus.
  • Documentation and Testing
  • Ability to design and architect complex software programs, and maintain them over time.
  • Experience managing software projects and teams using project management tools.
  • Ability to adopt new languages and frameworks quickly in order to help teams using them.
  • Interest and/or passion for teaching and technology; experience would be an asset.
  • Ability to work in a team, and to deal with ambiguity.
  • Good verbal and written communication in English; good presentation skills.
  • Startup experience is a plus.
  • We also encourage people with network and system administration experience to apply.

  • University/College degree or equivalent.
  • Highly engaged individuals.
  • Experienced: You have at least 2-4 years experience in an operational role at technology startups, or a consulting background. You can quantify your success in helping teams build and sell products people love.
  • Entrepreneurial: You have strong user acquisition instincts and can help a team market what they’ve built. You’re a born hustler who thrives in uncertain environments, with the grit to do whatever it takes to make an early stage team successful.
  • Articulate: You’re able to communicate clearly and convincingly with different stakeholders, including portfolio founders, MEST management, potential hires, and investors.
