Master Thesis on Immersive Augmented Reality - Device Technologies i Stockholm

Ericsson is the driving force behind the Networked Society where every person and every industry is empowered to reach their full potential. We make a difference, do you wanna shape the world with us?

Om tjänsten

Background

Ericsson Research is looking for Master Thesis candidates with enthusiasm and skill, to be part in our current Device Technology Research. End-user devices have a key role to fulfil in order to meet the future ICT needs. Devices such as, robots, autonomous vehicles and head-mounted displays will be a central part of our future. Many of these devices will be integrated into our lives in a way we can’t even imagine today.

Augmented Reality (AR) and Virtual Reality (VR) are foreseen to become an integral technology in the networked society and potently disrupt the consumer electronics market. True AR implies layering information such as text, images or videos on top of reality, on a user’s view of the world via a head-mounted display (HMD). Peripheral devices and wearables with haptic capabilities have the potential to increase the immersion in AR and VR experiences by allowing users to touch and feel the virtual content.

We encourage a maker attitude and the applicant will belong to a group of highly skilled and talented researchers working in the areas of future device concepts, and software / hardware related research topics.

Assignment

The objective of the thesis based in Kista, Stockholm, is to investigate and develop an immersive and mobile AR haptics system. With this system, the user can visualize content via an AR HMD, while being able to interact with the visualized content via haptic devices. The system should support both static and dynamic content. An efficient and automatic calibration and operation of both devices is envisioned.

The student is strongly encouraged to propose methods and innovative solutions to achieve the desired results. The developed methods are expected to be implemented in a test-bed currently available in our lab.

Deliverables

Deliverables expected at the end of the thesis project include clearly documented working code, a final thesis report, and a live demonstration - presentation of the final implementation and outcome to an Ericsson audience. Note that these are in addition to your university thesis requirements.

Qualifications

As a person you want to perform at your best and you want to participate in deep technical discussions with other team members. You believe that disruptive innovation happens in the intersection of different technology areas. We are looking for a self-motivated and creative student with the following qualifications:

  • Master student in the area of Engineering Physics, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Science, or similar.
  • Excellent analytical skills
  • Hands-on programming experience in Python, C/C++ and Matlab
