Master Thesis - EPGTOP a tool for monitoring of a distributed real-time system i Göteborg

Ericsson is the driving force behind the Networked Society where every person and every industry is empowered to reach their full potential. We make a difference, do you wanna shape the world with us?

Om tjänsten

As a market leader in mobile network solutions Ericsson is constantly working towards more efficient and more effective ways to visualize and monitor systems handling a major part of all mobile Internet traffic. One of the products in Ericsson's portfolio is the Evolved Packet Gateway (EPG).

The EPG sits in the middle of the Packet Core (PC) Network as a Gateway between the Radio network and the Internet. All traffic in a mobile network passes through this type of Gateway and thus it has high requirements when it comes to scalability, robustness and performance. The EPG is realized as a distributed real-time system that is split into a Control Plane and a Data Plane. The EPG runs on many different platforms - including Carrier-grade Routers, Virtual Machines and Containers.

One of the challenges within this product is monitor the various components within such as system.

We would like You to research and develop a built-in tool to facilitate easier hands-on system monitoring within the EPG product inspired by the Linux top ( tool.

This tool would be an EPG adaptation of a Linux- and industry standard program for system monitoring and troubleshooting - top. The epgtop command would be of benefit when conducting hands-on troubleshooting and analysis of EPG nodes and their behavior.

"The epgtop command provides a dynamic real-time view of a running EPG system. It can display system summary information as well as a list of processes being run within the EPG node. The types of system summary information shown and the types, order and size of information displayed for tasks are all dynamic. The program provides an interactive interface for process manipulation."

The key parts of the Research and Development needed are:
* Analyze various ways to obtain and store statistics needed from the different distributed components within EPG.
* Construct a terminal-based interface to display real-time information in a structured fashion - inspired by the Linux top tool.
* Optionally provide an external API that can be used by, for example, a Web GUI, or similar, to provide information collected in real-time.
* Optionally export the data collected using an appropriate syntax.
* Optionally add functionality to use epgtop as a "trampoline" to execute various tasks on a give process (e.g. execute "perf" on a process, kill it, restart it, etc.).
* Optionally utilize the information to perform heuristic analysis (or machine learning?) in order to highlight, and potentially predict, deviations from normal.

You must be interested and prepared to work hands-on in the EPG development environment to research, develop and troubleshoot the built-in tool. The thesis will
