30 credits – Electrostatic dust precipitator in automotive application i Sodertalje

Scania is a world-leading provider of transport solutions. Together with our partners and customers we are driving the shift towards a sustainable transport system. In 2016, we delivered 73,100 trucks, 8,300 buses as well as 7,800 industrial and marine engines to our customers. Net sales totaled nearly SEK 104 billion, of which about 20 percent were services-related. Founded in 1891, Scania now operates in more than 100 countries and employs some 46,000 people. Research and development are concentrated to Sweden, with branches in Brazil and India. Production takes place in Europe, Latin America and Asia, with regional production centers in Africa, Asia and Eurasia. Scania is part of Volkswagen Truck & Bus GmbH. Om tjänsten

Thesis project at Scania is an excellent way of making contacts for your future working life. Many of our current employees started their career with a thesis project.

Background:
Scania is aiming to build an efficient and low-resistant air cleaning system. However, in classic applications a high air cleaning efficiency causes high pressure drop and vice-versa. So-called “dust electrostatic precipitator” appears to have a huge potential providing an outstanding cleaning efficiency together with minimum of stream energy losses. For better understanding of how this device should be designed there arose a need of investigation the electrostatic means of dust separation.

Target:
The thesis should answer three questions:

  • Can we use an electrostatic precipitator on-a truck?
  • How high cleaning efficiency can we reach and how much of electric energy is needed for that
  • Can we get rid of air filter by substituting it with electrostatic precipitator. If yes, how much fuel can we save in that way.

Assignment:
Thesis will be divided in two parts. The first part is to carry out a thorough study of electrostatic phenomenon, to provide calculations on magnetic field and if possible calculate a necessary geometrical parameters in order to fit it on truck.
The second part is to make a parametric CAD model which can be used further on in electrostatic simulation. It should be robust and flexible within a limited design space and have a link to the air filter dimensions.
