30 credits – Development of a test prototype for aftertreatment systems i Sodertalje

Scania is a world-leading provider of transport solutions. Together with our partners and customers we are driving the shift towards a sustainable transport system. In 2016, we delivered 73,100 trucks, 8,300 buses as well as 7,800 industrial and marine engines to our customers. Net sales totaled nearly SEK 104 billion, of which about 20 percent were services-related. Founded in 1891, Scania now operates in more than 100 countries and employs some 46,000 people. Research and development are concentrated to Sweden, with branches in Brazil and India. Production takes place in Europe, Latin America and Asia, with regional production centers in Africa, Asia and Eurasia. Scania is part of Volkswagen Truck & Bus GmbH. Om tjänsten

A Master Thesis completed at Scania is an excellent way of experiencing and contributing to a dynamic research and development organisation whilst establishing a broad professional network. Many of our current employees started their career with a thesis project.

Background:
For the past years most of the public discussion connected to exhaust gases was about the influence of CO2 on the climate. Recently debates about the negative impact of Nitrogen oxides (NOx) emerged and lead to thoughts about “environmental zones” or banning diesel powered vehicles from certain cities.
More fuel efficient diesel-engines produce more NOx and the exhaust gases of these engines are colder. Together with stringent emission legislations around the world this requires a continuous development of aftertreatment systems for diesel powered engines.
One effective way to reduce NOx is using Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR). An urea-water solution (AdBlue®) is injected into the exhaust gases to obtain the ammonia needed in the catalyst.
The efficiency of the aftertreatment system depends on its capability of evaporating AdBlue® and distributing the gained ammonia.

Prototype test-rigs are used to increase the understanding of the phenomena in the aftertreatment system and to improve the ability to get information from CFD-simulations.
To ensure Scania's market leading position in sustainable transport a new test prototype for aftertreatment systems is supposed to be developed.
During the project the student will be in contact with groups focusing on testing, simulation and design.

Target:
The target of this project is to define and design a new test prototype for the development of aftertreatment systems.

Assignment:

  • together with the involved groups define the requirements for the test-rig
  • literature research to find and devise measurement methods
  • define and design test-rig
  • present the work with a final presentation and technical report
