30 credits – Surface characterization sealing surfaces i Sodertalje

Background:
A gasket or seal is a machine element which seal liquids and gases to avoid leakages. This challenges design when it comes to taking in account service life, cost, weight, and surface roughness for opposing components. How the surface is manufactured and the characteristics of it, is a key to understand the boundaries for robust sealing concepts.

Target:
The thesis work will lead to the drawing requirements that are to be stated in the drawing and also recommendations for when a surface is not considered to be sufficient to perform its sealing ability.

Assignment:
Surface characterization is to be evaluated in a test-rig to investigate how leakage is affected by surface roughness in sealing concepts. During this semester at KTH in Machine Design, advanced course, (MF2076) a test-rig is under construction in project: “2018-3: Development of a test rig evaluating sealing concepts” which will be suitable for this thesis.
