15-30 credits – Potential in additive manufacturing of a shaft i Sodertalje

Scania ingår i Traton Group.

Thesis project at Scania is an excellent way of making contacts for your future working life. Many of our current employees started their career with a thesis project.

Background:

Additive manufacturing (3D printing) in metallic materials is growing as an alternative to commonly known manufacturing techniques in the automotive business. Additive manufacturing is commonly used for parts with complex geometry and/or small series manufacturing. The manufacturing process also gives unique possibilities to create parts with a hollow or webbed internal structure on components which otherwise would have been made of homogenous material. The use of a hollow structure on parts which traditionally have been made of homogenous material can be interesting for weight sensitive applications.

Target:

Investigate and find a suitable design for a shaft within a gearbox with given design constraints and evaluate the product properties of the additive manufactured shaft with a traditionally manufactured homogenous shaft.

Assignment:

  • With respect to given design constraints find a design of a shaft within a gearbox suitable for additive manufacturing.
    • Investigate what kind of internal structure the shaft should have with respect to strength and stiffness.
    • How to model the internal structure in CAD.
    • Investigate what kind of tolerances achievable with the additive manufacturing technique.
    • Compare the weight potential of such a shaft to a shaft made with traditional manufacturing techniques.
    • Investigate which type of metallic materials are available for additive manufacturing and how well these are suitable for surface hardening.
    • Investigate the cost of such a shaft.
