In order to ensure that continuous improvements are achieved and that waste is eliminated during the development of new products, extensive digital and physical testing is performed.

Conducting a thesis project at Scania is thus an excellent way of preparing for your career as an engineer. Background:

Scania develops engines for trucks, buses and for installment in marine or industrial applications. These engines are subjected to vibration loads during operation. The nature of these vibrations depends partly on the environment in which the engine is mounted, and partly on operating parameters such as torque and engine speed.

Engine components are designed to have the required strength to withstand these vibrations, while minimizing the addition of unnecessary mass. Simulation and testing methods used to facilitate the design process are the subject of continuous improvements, which this thesis will contribute to.

Target:

The aim of this thesis is to develop a method capable of quickly comparing the influence of different operating conditions on the fatigue strength of auxiliary engine components. A special component has been created and is being tested in different operating conditions with the purpose of providing verification and validation data to be used during the development of the method.

Assignment:

The thesis project will be conducted at Scania R&D in Södertälje at the strength testing group NMBT in close collaboration with the strength analysis group NMBS and the design group NMGV.

The thesis project may be broken down into the following parts:

  • Perform a feasibility study including:
  • A literature study of existing experimental and simulation based methods for vibration fatigue evaluation at Scania and elsewhere.
  • An investigation of the users’ needs and requirements of the future method.
    • Develop a method to evaluate the vibration fatigue strength of components during different loading conditions.
  • Based on the literature study, choose theory/approach to base the method on.
  • Develop a script for automatically accessing and retrieving data from Scania’s databases of engine vibration levels.
  • Evaluate the validity and usability of the method by comparison to measurements on the newly created component in different engine configurations.
    • Present the results of the Master’s thesis in a comprehensive report and during an oral presentation at Scania R&D.
