Thesis Work for OPC UA TSN and Industry 4.0 i Kungsbacka

You will be part of the Machine Safety team in Kungsbacka. Our unit is part of ABB:s division Electrification Products and has approximately 60 co-workers. Our responsibility is to develop innovative products and solutions for machine safety to customers all over the world.

Uppgifter :

ABB Jokab Safety R&D department develops functional safety products for use in industrial applications to avoid injuries and deaths. The products that are developed must be free from systematic faults, which means that the development must be state of the art, follow applicable standards and undergo rigorous third parity reviews and tests.

The ABB Jokab Safety product range is very wide, everything from emergency stops to advanced safety PLCs. The products mainly consist of mechanics, HW electronics and embedded SW.

This thesis treats an analysis and implementation of the UPC UA TSN protocol with the industry 4.0 in mind.

The industry 4.0 today mainly covers data harvesting from servers in the factory area. The data is collected by an AI client in the cloud that has the capability to predict maintenance in connected factories. In the future this system shall be allowed to setup factories to produce different products on demand from the ordering system.

To meet the demands of industry 4.0 ABB has decided to set OPC UA TSN as standard in all new products that is produced.

OPC UA is a client/service-based machine to machine communication protocol for industrial automation developed by the OPC Foundation. TSN ads real-time capabilities that is required for communication between time sensitive systems and is especial important for functional safety systems with high Safety Integrity Level (SIL).

There are a lot of challenges in implementing the OPC UA TSN protocol when it comes to compatibility and functionality. An investigation must be done that covers both the higher product system level and the details inside the protocol to avoid unnecessary time and cost in the projects.

The thesis should at least result in the following outputs:
1. Overall compatibility analysis of internal ABB products and competitors.
2. Required functionality and technics using the OPC UA TSN protocol (PubSub etc).
3. Implementation of a demo unit that covers all the required functionality and technics. The implementation could be done on a Raspberry PI or similar embedded device.

Krav:

In order to be successful, ABB Jokab Safety is onvinced that the thesis has to be carried out by two master’s degree students (30 ECTS) in computer science, engineering and electrical engineering. The team of two persons need good knowledge of system design, IT architecture and programming skills.
The most part of the work should be performed on ite in Kungsbacka.
The thesis period is flexible but should start and end during 2019.
