Saab Training & Simulation (T&S) is world leading within advanced military training equipment using a laser based simulation system. We combine different technics like optronic, laser electronic, image processing, and mechanic to design user-friendly system with high training effect. See on YouTube.
Our laser based training system consist of shooting simulator system and target simulator system. The shooting system, which can simulate weapons ranging from low caliber handguns, to anti-tank weapons, up to heavy vehicle weapons, generates a laser based pulse signal according to the Laser Engagement Interface Standard called U-LEIS. The target system detect the laser pulse signal and decode the message in order to calculate the effect from the shooting system. Our simulators should work in different climate, why it is important to test and evaluate the detectors in the target system. To develop and evaluate detectors, a high performance code generator is essential in order to generate precise laser pulses.
The code generator must be flexible and have high performance in terms of speed and precision in order to test the boundaries of the target system. Saab's simulator system uses low-energy eye-safe laser, placing high demands on accurate timing. A solution based on an FPGA is one possible solution for meeting the high performance requirements the new code generator poses. Utilizing the possibilities that dedicated, specialized hardware can offer may increase both accuracy as well as speeding up the verification process.
You roleThe goal of this master’s thesis is to develop an FPGA based code generator and can be divided into the following work packages:
The work can be done either by one or two persons studying preferable Master of Science in Electronics Design Engineering or similar. Basic knowledge in FPGA design and VHDL is needed
