You will be part of Technology & Solutions Development, within the Power Grids division, in Ludvika. The Valve Development department is a part of ABB Technology & Solutions Development and is responsible for the development of state-of-the-art converters for HVDC and FACTS applications and focusing mainly on electrical and mechanical design aspects.

The HVDC technology has been on the market for the past 60 years and is used, among other things, to transmit power over long distances with minimal losses, using overhead lines, underground and submarine cable systems. Please find out more about our world leading technology at

In this thesis work we would like to challenge you to investigate the application of new converter topologies/semiconductors for HVDC application. As part of the thesis, you will perform semiconductor valve calculations and simulations in order to find out voltage stresses and losses in the semiconductors and valve electronics. The theoretic calculations will be combined with high power testing in our test laboratories.

· Period: January 2020 to June 2020
· This master thesis is equivalent to 30 ECTS
· The thesis work is recommended for one student
· The work is recommended to take place on site at ABB Ludvika

Your responsibilities
  • Your main target in this work will be investigation of new converter topologies and new semiconductors for HDVC Light application.
  • You will perform electrical design calculations to benchmark the performance of new solution.
  • You will optimize the solution across different performance metrics (cost, foot print, losses, reliability, etc).
  • You will be part of cross functional team and interact closely with the experts in the field.

Your background
  • Studying Master of Science in Electrical Engineering or Engineering Physics.
  • Strong interest in Power Electronics.
  • Proficiency in Matlab programming and circuit simulation tools such as PSpcie, PSCAD.
  • Experience with lab equipment and test setups.
