The User Platform (UP) tribe is a tribe in Spotify’s Platform mission. The Platform mission is responsible for building the tooling and support platforms for the engineering teams at Spotify. UP owns the platforms for authentication, authorization, user account data and user experience configuration at Spotify. UP was formed with the mission to enhance its technologies and move up the stack to provide a secure platform with reusable components that can be used in many different surfaces to help users log-in and manage their account data. UP is responsible for expanding the Spotify identity and access management (IAM) feature set to serve a wider set of Spotify customers and acquisitions. UP is also working with teams around Spotify to help them experiment and customize the user experience in new and more refined ways.
We are looking for strong, engaged software engineers to join our teams who are passionate about providing a trustworthy and friction free login experience and account management for hundreds of millions of users. As a staff engineer in UP you will be responsible for many of the core services needed for Spotify to run (e.g. login, user data, etc. for 286M+ customers worldwide). You will also be responsible for setting the longer term technical strategy for these services and future investment in IAM. You will build highly-available and high throughput solutions to enable the world access to music. At peak, we serve >600k requests per second to power tens of teams @ Spotify and handle serving >3TB of user account data to live services. You will also be able to innovate to create better, more seamless user experiences to help users access Spotify.
What you’ll do:
- Be a technical leader in the tribe and of IAM for Spotify’s many customers.
- Plan, architect, design, develop, deploy and operate backend systems and services, working with some of the highest throughput systems at Spotify.
- Champion technical and architectural excellence. Promote high standards in terms of adherence to best practices. Lead by example in terms of code consistency, performance, robustness, scalability, intuitive APIs and libraries, all of which are core tenets for our solutions.
- Share knowledge, evangelize best practices, and collaborate with some of the best engineers in the company
- Take operational responsibility for the services that are owned by your team, potentially including taking part in an on-call rotation
- Work in an environment that supports your individual growth by providing you with challenging work, the freedom to acquire new skills on hack days, reading groups, and a variety of internal training courses
- You will be based in Stockholm, but occasionally travel globally
Who you are:
- Have at least 8+ years of experience in working with highly scalable distributed systems.
- You are experienced with deploying and operating services on Linux in a cloud environment, preferably GCP.
- You work across organizational boundaries and build effective relationships to tackle highly complex technical problems.
- You are proficient in Java.
- You have experience working in an agile environment characterized by rapid change.
- You know and care about sound engineering practices like continuous delivery, defensive programming and automated testing.
- You’re familiar with designing and building distributed and scalable systems and enjoy seeing millions of users running your code.
- You have a good understanding of data structures and algorithms, and understand how to apply them to design pragmatic solutions.
