Thesis Work in Intelligent Shipping i Västerås

ABB Corporate Research Center in Sweden is located in Västerås, about 100 kilometers west of Stockholm. Together with our colleagues in other R&D centers we develop technologies for future products and services for ABB's core businesses.

The task is to develop and validate algorithms necessary for autonomous operation of marine vessels. Many of these next-generation algorithms must be developed from scratch. The subject areas are mainly control, estimation and decision support. Examples of applications are modeling and planning for use-cases such as, docking assistance, collision avoidance and maneuvering control.

Details:
• Time period: January - June 2021
• Master thesis 30 ECTS for each student
• Two students working jointly
• Partially on site depending on the COVID situation

• The thesis work is independent and you are expected to develop algorithms and drive the thesis report writing. However, you will be a part of a team that work with similar topics that is available for discussion.
• You will have an experienced supervisor that will coach you in important decisions.
• You will take responsibility for your own actions while caring for your colleagues and the business according to ABB’s core values.

• Background in physics, control, signal processing, machine learning, mathematics, optimization, or similar, where the student is expected to have completed all courses needed for to complete their master’s program.
• Experience in data-based modelling (system identification or machine learning) and motion planning are desirable.
• Motivation to solve real world problems using state-of-the-art methods.
• Strong people skills due to interaction with stakeholders in ABB.
