Background

Chaos engineering is a term coined up by Netflix in 2015 []. It is the discipline of experimenting on a system in a production like environment to build confidence in the system's capability to withstand turbulent and unexpected conditions. This process makes for more comprehensive and effective vulnerability testing, which benefits the end customer and the organization.

Scope

We want to introduce testing on the core system and specifically on the power and the network domains. In other words, we want to cause power failures and network failures and see how the system behaves. This task will introduce a modified VCU (Vehicle Computational Unit) and VIU (Vehicle Integration Unit) rig, where the core network (Ethernet) and power supply (VBAT domains) can be dynamically modified during the test runtime and assert whether the system operates normally. This involves:
 

• setting up the special hardware rig
• writing the software to cause these faults - we use robot test framework/python
• creating a test orchestrator, output parser and anomaly detection system in python

Profile

Do you like to hack and tinker with system wide functions? Do you have some experience with Linux (tc, iptables, scripting), python, and docker? Do your studies include computer science, and/or electrical engineering courses? Do you like breaking things and digging deep to figure out why the system is broken? Do you understand IPv4 (Internet Protocol Version 4) networking, vlans, and routing? Then you must apply! We are looking for you.

Duration

• The work will start in 2021 summer/fall (flexible arrangement possible)
• The duration for this thesis work is 20 weeks.
• 30 ECTS (academic credits) in agreement with your Thesis Advisor at your University
• This thesis is to be conducted by 2 students in tandem.
