Background
Electric vehicles are propelled be an electric machine which is being controlled by an inverter. The inverter has a DC-link capacitor to limit the stress on the battery which supplies the inverter with electrical energy. However, the DC-link capacitor is a physically large component and costly and should therefore preferably be a small as possible. At the same time the large operating range of the electrical machine and the need of filtering of battery currents drives the need to have as large a capacitor as possible. A balancing between the two attributes is therefore needed.

Scope
Make a study of battery current needed for different capacitor sizes for various machine operation points and drive cycles.

  • Model inverter with capacitor, battery and electrical machine.
  • Create simplified machine control strategy to have realistic currents and voltages.
  • Perform comparative studies and quantifying the impact the capacitor size has.
  • Final report which describes findings and the selected control strategy and potential issues or limitations of the method.
