Thesis Worker at Volvo Cars

Welcome to explore the world of Volvo Cars by writing your thesis with us! As a thesis worker in our organization you are supported by a supervisor who follows you during your project. All thesis projects are arranged in business critical areas and therefore you will be able to contribute to our company purpose – providing freedom to move in a safe, sustainable and personal way – from day one!

Background
The Electric Drive department at Volvo Cars is proud of being part of one of the most successful players in development for Electric Vehicles. We are responsible for delivering system solutions and functionality for the Electric machine and Transmission systems, in our electrified vehicles, in close co-operation with Inverter and SW development.
Our vision is to become “Leading in electrification” and aiming to contribute to world class sustainability, energy efficiency, E-machine functionality, customer satisfaction, to all our future products.

Scope
Increasing demand for electric vehicles has put a significant stress on designing highly efficient E-machine systems. Manufacturing methods to shape electrical steel sheets deteriorates electromagnetic properties of the material and increases iron losses. Traditionally, data sheets used in FEM simulation of electric machines are generated by sinusoidal flux. However, the switching of the inverter introduces high frequency distortion in the source voltage and therefore can impact the flux density and in general iron loss of the E-machines.
The main objective with this thesis work is to compare losses in electrical steel sheets used in construction of E-machines, with a sinusoidal and a non-sinusoidal flux density wave, through measurements and by modeling the losses using FEM-based software.
Finally do comparisons and draw conclusions.

Activities we foresee that should be done during this thesis work are:
•    Literature study of previous work done in this field.
•    Modeling in FEM based Software.
•    Doing measurements using an Epstein frame as well as a single sheet tester on different electro steel sheets with various shapes.
•    Implement the measured results into the simulation model and determine the impact of PWM feeding as well as steel sheet degradation due to manufacturing effects.
•    Final report which describes measurement method and modeling.

Your contribution is our future
We believe that you study Electric power engineering. And have experience in using MATLAB and FEM based applications like COMSOL or Maxwell for electromagnetic analyses and modeling.

Duration
• The duration of this thesis work is approx. 4-5 months.
• Starting date is in January 2023, exact date to be discussed.
• 30 ECTS
• This thesis work is to be conducted by 2 students working in pair.
• Office, computer and software will be organized by Volvo Cars, in close co-operation
   with your University.
