Thesis Worker at Volvo Cars

Welcome to explore the world of Volvo Cars by writing your thesis with us! As a thesis worker in our organization you are supported by a supervisor who follows you during your project. All thesis projects are arranged in business critical areas and therefore you will be able to contribute to our company purpose – providing freedom to move in a safe, sustainable and personal way – from day one! 



The Electric Drive department at Volvo Cars is proud of being one of the most successful players in SW development for Electric Vehicles. We are responsible for delivering system solutions and SW functionality for the Inverters, Electric machines, and transmission in our electrified vehicles. Our vision is to become “Leading in electrification” and aiming to contribute to world class sustainability, energy efficiency, E-machine functionality, customer satisfaction, to all our future products.


Efficient Oil Cooling of electric machine: 
All rotating electrical machines generate heat as a result of the electrical and mechanical losses inside the machine. Using oil cooling is a highly effective way to run the electric machine in the best way and to improve efficiency and reliability. 


To refine the current concept design. We would like to study the Oil Cooling of copper windings and stator, but at the same time prevent oil from entering the air gap between the rotor and stator to prevent losses. Oil in air gap can create 10-20 times higher losses.


Activities we foresee that should be done during this thesis work are: 
•    Benchmarking of competitors.
•    Create a 3D design of the concept
•    Prototype evaluation
•    Perform testing in rigs.

We believe that the suitable students study Electric power engineering or Mechanical Engineer. 


• The duration of the Thesis is approx. 4-5 months 
• The Thesis starts in spring 2023, exact date to be discussed 
• 30 ECTS (academic credits) if in agreement with your Thesis Advisor in University 
• This thesis is to be conducted by 2 students working in a pair 
• Office, computer, and software will be arranged by University and Volvo Cars.
