Thesis Worker at Volvo Cars

Background
Volvo Cars manufactures cars in the premium segment. Autonomous Drive (AD) technologies have arisen to be one of the most important innovation in the automotive industry.  In the short term, AD will transform commute behaviors, make the roads safer and improve efficiency. In the long term, AD has potential to radically alter the way we live, with huge benefits to both individuals and society. However, little focus has been given to the benefits and challenges of utilizing AD technology in the end of the car manufacturing processes and subsequent logistics. Volvo Cars term this as Autonomous Transports (AT) and is defined to be a combination of the two existing technologies AD and Automated Guided Vehicle (AGV). 


In an earlier study at Volvo Cars, process prerequisites, AT-Human interaction, and dependability were identified as key challenges. The overall purpose of this study is to investigate in-depth the key challenges and elaborate and recommend candidate solutions for AT. This in order to define requirements on vehicle and process design solutions for AT.


Scope
●    Literature review for locating and studying relevant AT technologies in manufacturing environments
●    Data collection (e.g., interviewing experienced personnel and using information in documents and archival data) at Volvo Cars for describing and assessing the key challenges for AT in-depth.
●    Identifying, analyzing and formulating candidate process/product solutions for AT.

 

Goals
Expected outcome of the study:
○    Recommendations on process/product solutions for AT and how they should be adapted and applied to AT for innovation in manufacturing 

 

Means
Office, computer and software will be arranged by University and Volvo Cars. 

 

Duration
This thesis work needs to be conducted by two students. The time period is January/February to May 2023.
