Background
The automotive industry is transforming more than ever - inside and out. This is also true for the center console, the heart of the interior, with new prerequisites gained by the flat battery floor.
With a changing market, the customer expectations are set to change as well. To stay competitive and continue the heritage of a premium interior experience, Volvo is now looking for students who will look at the area with fresh eyes.
 

Scope
The main scope of this thesis is to define a modular set-up for a center console which caters to the BEV customers’ expectations. Preferably, the modularity should be scalable for different car sizes as well as premium levels and types of ownership.

It should enable the key features within the Center console, e.g., cup holders and armrest in the traditional setup. Ideally, the ideas should be comprised into one or more concept proposals.
 

To be successful in designing these concepts, it is important to bring in input from different stakeholders within the company. Suggestions on how to balance input and customer expectations is expected.
 

Key words include versatility, modularity, robustness, and sustainability.
 

Main deliveries include:
•    Propose modular set-up and interfaces 
•    Concept visualization, such as suitable prototypes and preferably CAD models (in Catia V5)
•    Identify customer expectations and gaps in current fulfillment 
 

Additional potential aspects
•    Suggest material set-up with sustainability and circularity in mind

We are looking for 2 master students within Product development, Technical design, Mechanical engineering or similar.
 

Duration
•    The work will start in January 2023 
•    The duration for this thesis work is 20 weeks.
•    30 ECTS (Master academic credits)
•    This thesis is to be conducted by 2 Students working in pair.
