Thesis Worker at Volvo Cars

Welcome to explore the world of Volvo Cars by writing your thesis with us! As a thesis worker in our organization you are supported by a supervisor who follows you during your project. All thesis projects are arranged in business critical areas and therefore you will be able to contribute to our company purpose – providing freedom to move in a safe, sustainable and personal way – from day one!

Background
Volvo Cars’ Open Innovation Arena (OIA) seeks to explore solutions beyond today’s technical boundaries and business areas. Our projects aim to challenge the status quo of the mobility industry. Future Mobility Lab specializes in understanding future urban challenges and conceptualizing strategic mobility solutions accordingly. We are now looking for students to design and develop a concept for motorized haulage.

Scope
The main scope of this thesis is to design and develop a motorized micro-haulage platform meeting the requirements set by Volvo’s innovation organization. While some needs are pre-defined, others are to be determined within the scope of the project.

The project requires a combination of ergonomics, mechanical engineering, and conceptual design from the project tandem. Although the project will be centered on the later parts of the design process, following strategic work from Volvo, we expect the team to maintain an iterative human-centered design focus. The team will be working independently, under frequent supervision by Volvo, in order to maintain a healthy balance between requirements and innovation. We seek people who are willing to push boundaries and think outside the box.

Main deliveries
•    Concept ideas for a motorized micro-haulage vehicle, based on Volvo’s prerequisites
•    Clever solutions addressing new problems, including additive manufacturing as an enabler for sustainability
•    Foldable motorized concept vehicle to demonstrate mechanical feasibility, accompanied by technical documentation such as drawings

Your contribution is our future

We are looking for two master’s students (30 ECTS) working in tandem with a background within ergonomics, mechanical engineering, or equivalent.

Duration
Around 20 weeks, starting January 2023.
