Background

Li-ion batteries are expected to meet the challenges of the electrification of the automotive sector. Its components need to be selected on the basis of attributes such as performance, safety and durability. Li-ion cells with different form factors; cylindrical, pouch, prismatic, have been proposed and each type of cell has advantages and disadvantages in terms of manufacturing, packaging density, and properties such as energy, impedance, etc. Cylindrical cells with increased capacity, e.g. the 46xx series, have been recently proposed, likely enhancing their utilization in battery packs.

The goal of this project is to characterize cylindrical Li-ion cells for automotive applications to get insights into their performance and ageing phenomena, when exposed to accelerated aging. Techniques that will be used are, but not limited to, Galvanostatic cycling and Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS). Furthermore, insights into cell design will be given.

Scope

As a Master student you will be introduced to cylindrical cells to understand their performance and aging phenomena by performing test of Li-ion cells. You will define and validate different testing methods, their setups and analyse data. Techniques that will be used are, but not limited to, Galvanostatic cycling and Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS).
