Thesis Work - Linux resume/suspend, kernel and userland enhancements i Göteborg

The Linux kernel supports a mechanism called swap suspend (something that is called hibernation in other operating systems) that allows a Linux based OS to gracefully be powered off while maintaining its current state upon returning from the power off state.

As part of this work, we want to experiment implement userland tooling that allows us to generate custom suspend/resume images, and measure system performance on the resume path. The work may be performed either in virtualized environments (e.g., qemu, or other emulation technology) and in a real embedded device. We will develop certain userland tools that allows us to generate the resume/suspend images, and we may work to tune the resume performance.

Relevant technical domains: Verification and Validation testing, Cybersecurity, System availability, System reliability

• Love for Linux, both kernel and userland
• Python/shell scripting, appreciation on tools such as black, ruff, or shellcheck
• Background in computer science, computer engineering, electrical engineering, electronics, or another relevant field
• (optional) A partner! We believe in excellence through collaboration and thus we would like to have at least two people collaborating for this thesis. If you do not have a partner do not worry, we can also match you.

• The work to start in 2024 (exact date to be discussed)
• The duration for this thesis work is 20-24 weeks. (full time/part time).
• 15-30 ECTS (academic credits) if in agreement with your Thesis Advisor in University, depending on individual scope.
• This thesis work will be conducted at Volvo Cars Gothenburg/Lund.
• This thesis work is to be conducted by 1-2 students. If you apply as a pair, make sure both of you submit your applications. 
• Office, computer, and software will be organized by Volvo Cars, in co-operation with your university.
