Background

In the past embedded systems were defined by offering simple functionality, and simple communication channels. They were released as “system in a box” where all software was integrated by a single entity. Today’s embedded systems typically integrate significantly more functionality, with multiple communication channels, and offering multidimensional hardware controls that allow partitioning the system more effectively. Normally they come with peripherals and bus that may be virtualized (e.g. L1/L2 cache partitioning, SRIOV support, arm’s AMBA with AXI, arm’s GICv3 etc.). Such hardware together with a hypervisor enables a system integrator to partition the system in different ways depending on its use cases.

Scope

As part of this work, we want to define, implement, and experiment with a set of testbenches that allow us to measure guest isolation. These benches will target will primarily arm IP following the v8-A or the v8-R specifications. In parallel we will define and measure different architectural KPIs from an isolation perspective.
