Master Thesis on Distributed Device Synchronization - Future Device Technologies i Stockholm

Ericsson Research is looking for Master Thesis candidates with enthusiasm and skill, to be part in our current Device Technology Research. Sensors, machines, cameras, screens, tactile interfaces, robots, wearable’s – all devices with embedded computing and interface capabilities of a varying kind have a key role in distributed sensing and actuation systems. A limiting factor to the performance of these systems is how well sensing and actuation can be synchronized between each of the distributed devices.

Om tjänsten

Assignment
The objective of the thesis based in Kista, Stockholm, is to investigate solutions for synchronizing distributed devices, such as sensors and actuators. The objective of this thesis is to design, build and evaluate the performance of a setup where devices are synchronized wirelessly. With this setup, multiple devices will work together in order to extend the capabilities of what a single device can achieve. This opens possibilities for completely new use-cases, as well as improving existing ones. As a student, you will gain first-hand experience in an essential objective of future distributed devices, assigned with tasks that include:

  • Design and setup a system that will perform wireless synchronization of both hardware and software components.
  • Evaluate performance and various use cases that would benefit from the results.
  • What are the key-components and which kind of parameters would be needed to set up a synchronized system? How does one achieve these parameters?
  • With the system developed, how much work and what would it require to adopt the devices we have today to use wireless synchronization?
  • Evaluate and come up with methods that would allow a synchronized system to be self-evaluated and correct itself due to errors and delays that might be frequent in wireless networks.
  • Handle dependencies to other sensors, and what to do if the dependencies would fail, creating a robust approached system.

The student is strongly encouraged to propose methods and innovative solutions to achieve the desired results. The developed methods are expected to be implemented in a cyber-physical test-bed currently available in our lab. We encourage a maker attitude and the applicant will belong to a group of highly skilled and talented researchers working in the areas of future device concepts, and software / hardware related research topics.

Deliverables
Deliverables expected at the end of the thesis project include clearly documented working code, a final thesis report, and a live demonstration - presentation of the final implementation and outcome to an Ericsson audience. Note that these are in addition to your university thesis requirements.

Qualifications
As a person you want to perform at your best and you want to participate in deep technical discussions with other team members. You believe that disruptive innovation happens in the intersection of different technology areas. We are looking for a self-motivated and creative student with the following qualifications;

  • Master student in the area of Engineering Physics, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, or similar
  • Fluency in English
  • Excellent analytical skills
  • Hands-on programming experience, preferably in C/C++
  • Experience with embedded programming
  • Experience of embedded systems
  • Ability to work independently Bonus
  • Experience in Linux
  • Low-level/Driver development
