Master Thesis- Feature Usage Database i Göteborg

Every time you use an app on your smartphone, talk over VoLTE or use Mobile Broadband you connect to internet – this connection is what we enable, no matter if its 3G, 4G or 5G! We deliver connectivity technology with TB throughput in combination with extensive configuration options for traffic control and information collection for our customers. 

We at Ericsson Packet Core (PC) in Lindholmen are now looking for young talented developers who want to do their Master Thesis in collaboration with us.

The Thesis

The Evolved Packet Gateway has been in development for many years. Features have been added constantly over time to meet the customer requirements. As more features are added, the total cost of ownership increases as we also need to maintain the legacy features. Feedback on which features are used by our customers is primarily focused on the new features, hence we do not know which features we could regards as obsolete.

We are now looking for someone to help us out. We want to build a knowledge database containing:
- What features are used

- How the features are configured

- In what release they are used

Ericsson would have much to gain from a feature knowledge database. This would give teams feedback on how the features they develop are used, and it could serve as a decision basis for deprecating features.

Such a database together with a frontend exists for Ericssons SGSN-MME, a product that exists besides Evolved Packet Gateway in the Packet Core. We are now looking to extend it with support for Evolved Packet Gateway configurations.

The work needed to achieve this would be:

- Gather the feature usage data from existing Customer Support Requests
- Anonymize and save the gathered data in the knowledge database
- Make the data available to EPG developers and leaders

The current database and frontend uses the following technologies:

- Perl scripting

- MySQL database

A successful implementation of the Thesis Work may however not be limited to Perl and MySQL if we can find a more efficient way forward.
