Ericsson is the driving force behind the Networked Society where every person and every industry is empowered to reach their full potential. We make a difference, do you wanna shape the world with us?
Internet of Things (IoT) has emerged as a hot topic in both industry and academia in recent years. Everything is expected to be connected in the IoT era, from critical infrastructures to consumer devices. This becomes one key enabler for digitalization, which will empower the society and people with the intelligence driven by the big amount of digital data collected.
Edge computing is another new paradigm to get data processed close to the devices where the data is generated and/or consumed. Edge computing is sometimes also referred to fog computing. Some of the key benefits compared with cloud computing are: low latency, local data processing and offload, and improved security.
In this project, the aim is to investigate how IoT connectivity can benefit from the edge computing paradigm. One problem for IoT connectivity is the technology fragmentation. There are many radio technologies and standards, e.g. BLE, Zigbee, WiFi, LoRa, NB-IoT, available for IoT applications. Often only one technology cannot fulfill the requirements of complex use cases like smart manufacturing. Currently, parallel networks have to be deployed in this case. In this project, we will consider the possibility to centralize the IoT functions from lower layers to high layers into an edge computing platform, with the goal to create a convergent IoT system with multiple technologies, from connectivity, data processing, and management aspects. The concept will be prototyped and evaluated on a software defined radio (SDR) based system.
