Thesis Work: PEMS measurements on vehicles

Background

Volvo Car Corporation develops market leading Powertrains with the development of SW and HW tested within the Vehicle Emission and Climate Testing. Vehicle Emission and Climate Testing, dept 91870, not only develops and operates vehicle testbeds but it has also responsibilities for advanced emission measurement systems including Portable Emissions Measurement Systems (PEMS) which is used to measure emissions on vehicles in real world traffic. Traditionally vehicles have been certified for emissions using test cells with standard equipment where several aspects are simulated like customer driving, roadload and temperature. However, future legislative limits will focus on particle number and NOx during real world driving which create a lot of variability in results due to different routes, traffic situation, temperature etc.

Scope

This thesis work should give insight into testing variability and main factors influencing levels and variability.

The aim of the project is to:

  • Literature studies on PEMS testing
  • Construct suitable driving routes
  • Use a PEMS to measure emissions in real world traffic
  • Characterise variability in testing and main factors influencing variability and emission levels
  • Report the findings
  • Measurements will be done using av test vehicle equipped with a PEMS in real world traffic

Required qualifications

  • Chemical/Mechanical Engineering or similar
  • Knowledge in engine emissions
  • Must have a Swedish type B driving license
