Om tjänsten

Uppsala University, Department of Earth Sciences

PhD student in meteorology

Are you interested in working with the atmospheric boundary layer, with the support of competent and friendly colleagues in an international environment? Are you looking for an employer that invests in sustainable employeeship and offers safe, favourable working conditions? We welcome you to apply for a PhD-student position at Uppsala University.

The Department of Earth Sciences is Sweden"s most comprehensive academic environment for research and education in geoscience. It offers a broad range of expertise that can contribute to solving important societal issues. Earth is a dynamic and constantly changing planet. To understand how this planet works, our researchers seek answers in the field, through laboratory experiments and advanced models. Our research and education cover a wide range of disciplines, including rocks and minerals, weather and climate, the evolution of life, natural disasters, wind power and energy, environmental and water engineering, and sustainable development. Our research combines natural sciences and technology with social sciences and is often interdisciplinary. More than 300 people from over 30 countries work at the department, both in Uppsala and at Campus Gotland.

Our six research divisions: • Geophysics • Air, Water and Landscape Science • Mineralogy, Petrology and Tectonics • Natural Resources and Sustainable Development • Palaeobiology • Wind Energy

The project is a collaboration between Uppsala University and the Swedish Defence Research Agency (FOI). At Uppsala University the meteorology group is a part of the research division for Air- water and Landscape science. We are, since long, performing experimental and theoretical research on the atmospheric boundary layer.

Duties

The position is part of a larger project focused on radar wave propagation over the Baltic Sea and in the coastal zone, using an experimental approach to create a better understanding of weather-related effects. The aim is to study, through the processing of existing data and the collection of new measurements in the coastal zone, the impact of primarily atmospheric gradients in humidity and temperature on radar wave propagation, with the main focus on so-called ducting layers. Complementary oceanographic measurements of sea waves and water temperature, as well as high-frequency turbulence measurements in the atmosphere, will also be used to evaluate the representation of the near-surface layers in coupled atmospheric models.

The tasks include collecting meteorological measurements using existing systems for humidity gradient measurements at the Östergarnsholm measurement station, employing new technologies such as UAVs, and modeling meteorological coastal processes and phenomena that may affect radar propagation.

RequirementsTo meet the entry requirements for doctoral studies, you must
  • hold a Master's (second-cycle) degree an academic degree in the natural sciences with a specialization in meteorology or an equivalent field. Other technical or natural science degrees may also be considered, particularly in oceanography., or
  • have completed at least 240 credits in higher education, with at least 60 credits at Master's level including an independent project worth at least 15 credits, or
  • have acquired substantially equivalent knowledge in some other way.

You also need knowledge of mathematics and physics, as well as basic computer skill.

Rules governing PhD students are set out in the Higher Education Ordinance chapter 5, §§ 1-7 and in Uppsala University's rules and guidelines.
