Om tjänsten
Research at the Department of Molecular Biosciences, The Wenner-Gren Institute (MBW) experimentally addresses fundamental problems in molecular cell biology, integrative biology, and infection and immunobiology. State-of-the-art and advanced methodologies are applied in a professional research environment characterized by its well-established international profile. The institute has 30 research groups with a research staff of 180, of which 65 are PhD students. More information about us, please visit: the Department of Molecular Biosciences, The Wenner-Gren Institute.
Subject area
This PhD student position is in the area of RNA biology with focus on brain development and RNA editing. The thesis work will be conducted in the laboratory headed by Dr. Eduardo A. Sagredo at MBW. Our research aims to disentangle the role of RNA modifications in different processes of RNA life, such as RNA localization and RNA stability/degradation. The successful candidate will work on a fully funded project aiming to systematically investigate the relationship between RNA editing and subcellular mRNA localization during neuronal differentiation and brain development, using state-of-the-art transcriptome-wide sequencing and functional approaches. The successful candidate will join a dynamic, internationally oriented research environment at the intersection of RNA biology, epitranscriptomics, and neuroscience. The project offers training in current and novel transcriptomic and cell-biology methods as well as neuronal differentiation models and animal studies (mice).
Qualification requirements
In order to be admitted to postgraduate education, the applicant must have the general and specific entry requirements. The qualification requirements must be met by the deadline for applications.
You meet general entry requirements if you have completed a second-cycle degree, or completed courses equivalent to at least 240 higher education credits, of which 60 credits must be in the second cycle, or have otherwise acquired equivalent knowledge in Sweden or elsewhere.
Specific entry requirements are described in the general syllabus for doctoral studies in the field of Molecular Biosciences. You meet the specific entry requirements if you have at least 120 credits in molecular biology, biology, chemistry or the equivalent at the undergraduate level, and at least 60 credits at an advanced level in molecular biosciences or the equivalent, of which at least 30 credits must consist of an independent thesis project.
Selection
The selection among the eligible candidates will be based on their capacity to benefit from the training. The following criteria will be used to assess this capacity:
- Documented knowledge in a relevant field of research as well as a research proposal for the intended project (maximum 2 pages) should be included in the application.
- Strong interest in interdisciplinary technology development related to RNA biology, genomics, and/or proteomics.
- Hands-on experience in molecular biology, proteomics, and/or genomics focused on interpreting biological data and experimentally testing hypotheses (e.g., Western Blotting, immunoprecipitation, and immunofluorescence, qPCR, RNA-seq, and/or CLIP-related methods).
- Experience in cell culture and mouse animal work is considered highly meritorious.
- Basic knowledge of programming languages (such as bash, R, or Python) for handling NGS datasets is considered a plus.
- Independence in the analysis and organization of the earlier scientific work.
- Problem formulation and rigor in previous scientific work and in the research plan.
- Previously shown ability to keep the specified time limits.
- Methodological and scientific maturity, describing independence, initiative and collaborative skills.
- Strong written and oral communication skills in English.
