Master Degree Thesis Work with ABB, Sweden – Electromagnetic Noise Estimation in Traction Motors i Västerås

This project will be done for ABB Traction Motor team, Robotics and Motion Division. The division offers products, solutions and service that increase productivity and energy efficiency. Motors, generators, frequency converters, PLC devices (programmable logic controllers) and robots drive, control and effect movement in a large number of automation applications. A leading position within wind power generators and an offer within the solar energy area complement the division's industrial focus and leverage the benefits of common technology.

Uppgifter :

Traction motors need to comply with noise requirements at low- and high-speed ranges. Those requirements might come directly from the costumers or standards. Therefore, an appropriate tool is needed to be used in design phase to accurately predict noise produced by the traction motor.

Three main sources of noise are considered in electrical machines: mechanical noise form e.g. bearing, electro-magnetic noise produced by electromagnetic forces and aero acoustic noise from the cooling.

The aim of this project is to evaluate electromagnetic noise in traction motors designed for railway application. Considering complexity of the problem, a multiphysics mechanical, electromagnetic and acoustic model will be developed with the aim of estimating noises in traction motors at low speed where the electromagnetic noise is the dominating source.

Krav:

Two master students one with background in sound and vibration and another one with background in electromagnetic modelling of electrical machines will be employed for this project. The students should be able to work in the lab and get the required measurements. Experience in MATLAB/Simulink and finite element structural analysis is beneficial. The thesis will be done either at ABB Traction, Västerås, or academia.

• Thesis project period is minimum six months
• The number of credits can be adjusted according to the study program
• Two master students are considered under this topic.
