You will be part of the mechanical analysis development group at ABB Robotics. We are responsible for simulating, optimizing and calculating the Manipulators, the mechanical robot products, to achieve a proper balance between performance, strength, quality and cost. We continuously work with improving our processes and tools. One part of the responsibility is to create simulation models of the robot, and in this case with predicting robot behavior before there is a mechanical prototype ready for testing.

The goal of this thesis work is to develop a gearbox model that captures the relevant behaviour of a robotics gearbox.
The work will include experimental work on a gear test rig, i.e. working on the measurements, creating measuring programs that derive characteristic parameters of the gear (like play, stiffness, friction) and representation of the data.
The work will include model development in the dynamic modelling environment Dymola/Modelica, and model parameter identification, based on the measured data, in Matlab.
Finally the developed models can be integrated in a flexible multibody simulation of a manipulator to see their effect on the complete robot.

Master degree student with orientation toward measurement and dynamic model development, Basic knowledge of mechanical systems, machine elements and tribology is required. Knowledge of Matlab, Modelica and Dymola is an advantage.
The work will be done at ABB Robotics in Västerås.
