M.Sc student for a 8 months Diploma Thesis in a fluid dynamic laboratory at Siemens in Finspång, Sweden

Join us on our journey into the future #FutureMakers#Siemens

Be part of an open and dynamic workplace where professional and personal development is high on the agenda. By making sustainable energy solutions more cost effective, developing new technologies for the future's smart industry and electrifying passenger and freight transport, we make reality of our vision of a sustainable world.

Components in modern gas turbines may experience temperatures up to 2000K at rotational velocities around 2000km/h. Since no suitable materials can withstand such loads, much effort is put into the development of efficient cooling methods and these may be the difference between engine failure and success. The introduction of additive manufacturing has given cooling design new possibilities and not only for internal convective cooling but also in film cooling where nouveau geometries may be introduced.

The challenge - what does the Diploma Thesis entail?

The scope of the present Diploma Thesis is to work in an experimental test rig for investigating film cooling effectiveness and heat transfer coefficients using the semi-infinite assumption and thermochromic liquid crystals. Whereas the previous study verified the test rig with conventional cooling holes, the present thesis will investigate controversial ones such as porous film cooling slots. As a final result the student will use the experimental results for creation of a heat transfer correlation.

Similar test rigs have previously been used by diploma students at the fluid dynamics laboratory at Siemens, Finspång to investigate heat transfer and pressure losses. All previous studies were accepted for publication in the Journal of Turbomachinery and/or at ASME Turbo Expo (TURBO-14-1171, GT2014-25619, GT2015-42475, GT2017-64143, GT2018-75019).

Who are you?

  • The goal of each of our Diploma Thesis’ is to create a work of publication quality.
  • Our demands on the student are high and you must be familiar with gas dynamics, dimensional similarity, numerical methods and Matlab.
  • You must be very driven, ambitious and prepared to work hard.
  • Good skills in English language are required both in speech and writing.

The work will start in the autumn/winter of 2018 and be conducted in the fluid dynamic laboratory at the Siemens gas turbine site in Finspång, Sweden.

An hourly wage will be offered for 8 months. In special cases, Siemens offer long-distance student accommodation during the thesis project.
