We are looking for a PhD student in Medical Science.

Your work assignments

We are looking for a PhD student to join Professor Henrik Green's research group, focusing on studies of new psychoactive substances. As a PhD student, you will participate in a project aimed at improving the detection, characterisation and interpretation of emerging drugs. The project is expected to include studies of prevalence and trends, quantitative analysis, pharmacological effects, and the identification of biomarkers of intoxication and cause of death. The work will involve analysis of clinical and forensic samples using high-resolution mass spectrometry, in vitro pharmacological characterisation of new psychoactive substances, as well as metabolomics and machine learning.

As a PhD student, you devote most of your time to doctoral studies and the research projects of which you are part. Your work may also include teaching or other departmental duties, up to a maximum of 20 per cent of full-time.

Your qualifications

You have graduated at Master's level or completed courses with a minimum of 240 credits, at least 60 of which must be in advanced courses. Alternatively, you have gained essentially corresponding knowledge in another way.

Applicants are expected to hold a three-year Bachelor's degree in Biomedical Laboratory Science and at least one-year Master's degree corresponding to 60 higher education credits at the advanced level in a relevant field, such as biomedical laboratory science, medicine, biomedicine, pharmacy, medical science, or an equivalent discipline.

You should have a strong interest in research and science, as well as biology, chemistry, pharmacology, and research addressing important societal challenges. We are looking for a motivated candidate with an interest in biomedical laboratory science, analytical chemistry, and pharmacology. Great importance will be placed on personal qualities such as commitment, motivation, communication skills, and the ability to collaborate. Applicants must have good written and spoken English and Swedish. You are expected to work independently while also collaborating effectively with other members of the research group. The successful candidate will also be expected to actively participate in teaching and student supervision, corresponding to a maximum of 20% of full-time employment. Applicants should have experience with basic methods in biomedical laboratory science, pharmacology, and analytical chemistry, such as sample handling, chromatographic methods, and basic pharmacological techniques.

Documented experience in the characterisation of pharmaceuticals or drugs, analysis of large datasets, metabolomics, chromatography, and various mass spectrometric techniques will be considered an advantage. Experience in teaching is desirable but not required. Special attention will be placed on personal suitability.

The employment

The employment has a duration of normally four years' full-time equivalent. Extension of employment up to five years is based on the degree of teaching and institutional assignment. Further extensions may be granted in exceptional circumstances. You will initially be employed for one year, after which your employment will be renewed for a maximum of two years at a time, depending on your progress through the study plan.
